Peer Support Services in Utah

Peer support services are an important role for any recovery. A Certified Peer Support Specialist is an individual who uses their lived experience in recovery from mental illness and/or substance use disorder, in addition to skills learned in a formal training, to deliver services promoting recovery and resiliency.

Can Peer Support Services Help You?

To become a peer support specialist you are required to be a year sober and living a healthy way of life. Once you decide that this is the journey you would like to take, the  next step is to submit an application to the state where they do a background check on you. After the review is complete the state puts you in a required class to learn skills on how  to help others go through the recovery process. The state offers  two classes you can go in person or you can do a hybrid class that is done online. The certification is good for three years before needing to renew your certificate. During those three years you continue to take classes(CEU’S) to keep learning and growing to better help others. These CEU’s are offered by going to conventions, online webinars, or going to classes. In these classes you are required to learn about peer support services, mental health, substance use, suicide prevention, and ethics.

As a peer support our job is to help others in addiction and mental illness to see that there is a way out and that you can live a happy, helpful, fulfilled life. They are here to be a support to you as you go through your journey of recovery. Peer workers help you by sharing their own lived experience and practical guidance, help you develop goals, create strategies for self-empowerment, and help you take concrete steps towards building and fulfilling self-determined lives for yourselves.

Here at Beecon Recovery peer support staff will meet with you in  individual sessions and in a group setting to help build a community of both patients and staff that is supportive and conducive to patient growth and recovery. They assist in the creation and implementation of social activities outside of treatment to help create a support system for when you leave treatment and can continue to care.

Can Peer Support Services Help You?

We offer a mentoring program where you and your mentor  learn about the subconscious and conscious mind, release techniques, empowerment tools, goal setting, and how to implement the mentor plan. Our goal is to help and support you in any way we can to give you the best chance at living the life you have always wanted. Engaging in a peer support intervention may be effective for reducing clinical mental illness symptoms, improving overall personal recovery, and more specifically hope.

Without peer support many people feel like they are not understood or feel alone through the recovery process. Peer workers  understand that life hasn’t been easy and that we all have a past but our pasts don’t have to define us and they have a choice to sit in the problem or to rise and become greater than we thought possible. If you are struggling with addiction or mental illness, know that you are not alone and don’t have to go through this journey by yourself. There are people just like you that have found a life of purpose and beauty. There is HOPE!
